Peer Helping: a Ministry of the College

While the bases of the training and foundation of the college is Christian some campuses choose to broaden their outreach with a diverse cross section of the student body both in age, in major, activity and ethnic representation. In this way there is more buy-in from faculty, staff and the student body. The Peer Helpers use their ministering skills in a variety of settings across the campus.
Campus Ministry
Leadership Team
Some campus ministries choose to train their existing leadership team knowing that they will need these skills as they plan and implement the various functions and activities for others.
Peer Ministry Team
Peer Ministry teams consist of students who are not responsible for planning and implementing activities but who participate watching and helping with the needs of others while creating a welcoming atmosphere. These acts of care and welcome spills out into the dorms, classrooms affecting the total life of the campus.
Campus Minister Assistance
In this model one or more students may receive paid stipends to work along side a campus pastor. Often these students may travel to attend a four-day training as part of their preparation with the option of helping train other students.
Academic Classes
Three campuses presently are using the National Peer Ministry Centers curriculum as courses within their Youth and Family Ministry, and Director of Christian Education (D.C.E.) majors. Learning to train others in caring ministry is an essential tool for anyone going into church vocations with children, youth and families.
Faculty/Staff
Real education does not isolate a class subject from the life, values and hearts of student. Peer education assumes that every learner brings to the class life experience that adds to and shapes the subject. Peer Ministry training offers a team building experience along with a model for teaching and learning. It also give tools to faculty staff to provide a caring model for helping and referring students in the midst of life’s tough decisions.
