Our Commitment to America's Promise
America's
Promise was created at the 1997 President's Summit for America's
Future in Philadelphia with General Colin Powell as the founding
chairman. At the heart of America's Promise is a set of promises
made to every child in America. To help all children grow into
healthy strong and productive adults, these five promises must
be fulfilled:
- An ongoing relationship with a caring adult - parent, mentor,
tutor or coach
- A safe place with structured activities during non-school
hours
- A healthy start
- A marketable skill
- An opportunity to give back through community service
The National Peer Ministry Training Center's commitment was accepted
by America's Promise in the spring of 1999. Later that year, the
National Director of Peer Ministry, Lyle Griner, had an opportunity
to meet General Powel and was awarded a red wagon, the symbol
of Americas Promise. This wagon is now proudly displayed
in the Peer Ministry office.
Peer Ministry Commitment With America's
Promise
Our commitment is to train 750 adult facilitators in mentoring,
leadership and training skills over four years; pair each of these
adult facilitators with about ten youth for a total of 7,500 by
2004; train and certify them in caring and life skills; oversee
them in diverse service projects; and encourage those trained
youth to serve others by mentoring, becoming part of leadership
teams, and using their newly acquired skills in daily life. A
young person may be paired up with another who is struggling with
a particular life issue such as family changes or addictions.
